Haastattelussa Kalifornian Sacramentosta kotoisin oleva tuottaja-räppäri C-Dubb. Hän on tuottanut urallaan muun muassa Hollow Tipia, Mozzya, Big Tonea ja Brotha Lynch Hungia. C-Dubb julkaisi debyyttialbuminsa ‘Kalifornia Home Of The Body Bag’ vuonna 1997, jonka jälkeen hän on julkaissut lukemattomia sooloalbumeita sekä yhteisprojekteja.
- What’s up, C-Dubb? How are you today?
I’m doin’ great.
- Where are you from?
Sacramento, California.
- What was the first rap album you remember being blown away by?
The Click’s Down & Dirty. It made me think to myself, “Now this is rap!” Even though I was already into Too $hort real heavy as well. He had that same effect on me.
- How did you get the name C-Dubb?
CW is my initials. Not too creative, but it stuck.
- What did you start doing first, producing or rapping?
First, I was writing raps. When I booked studio time as a kid (about 14 years old), I got to the studio, and the engineer asked me if I had a beat to record my song to. I didn’t even know I needed a beat. He told me, “Well, I have keyboards if you need to make one.” So I had to make a beat from scratch. I was instantly hooked on producing.
- Who influenced you most as a producer?
Studio Ton, Mike Mosley, Sam Bostic, Ant Banks, K-Lou, DJ Daryl, Larry D, Sean T, DJ Quik, T-Roy, Cellski, and JT The Bigga Figga, to name a few. I studied these dudes heavy.
- Where and how do you work best? What are three things you need in a studio?
I have my own studio. That’s where I do all of my work. Three things I use daily are my computer, keyboard, and software.
- What hardware do you use?
At the Mobbhouse, I use a Neumann TLM 103 microphone, Apollo Twin, and UA Solo 610 preamp.
- And what software?
Pro Tools and Reason.
- Who would you say are your all-time favorite rappers?
Too $hort, E-40, Bela.
- You just collaborated with C.O.S. Can you tell us a little bit about it?
We’ve been talking about doing this album for years. Life gets in the way sometimes. Both of us are busy with other shit, but finally, we made it happen. It’s a dope project. I had a good time making this one.
- Do you have a favorite track from the album?
“All Black.”
- What’s the main focus for 2022?
Just to keep building the studio and the brand. I haven’t stopped growing since I started. So as long as I’m still going up, I’m motivated to keep it pushing.
- What type of advice would you give to young artists that want to have a career in music?
Stay out the way if you’re garbage and not trying to take it seriously! But if you’re in it to win it, make sure to look professional with everything you do.
- Any last thoughts?
